documentation: webmaster usage

ChangeDetection allows webmasters to easily improve a site, adding unique and useful functionality that cannot easily be duplicated. Using our service can both increase traffic and visitor satisfaction.

This document covers the following areas:

We assume that you are familiar with the basic operation of ChangeDetection.com. If not please first review General Usage.

Building Traffic to Your Site

ChangeDetection can help you build traffic to your website. Not instantly, not in some magical way, but rather by turning casual visitors into repeat visitors and keeping loyal visitors coming back.

ChangeDetection provides two key tools for your website:

  • email notifications to your visitors when your site changes
  • change logs of what has changed on your site
To understand why these are important tools for your website continue reading the sections below.

How Browsing Really Works

You know what we're about to say from your own experience browsing the web, but it's useful to state it clearly:

If you don't update your site daily, people will stop visiting...
...unless you use ChangeDetection.
After all, who has the time to keep returning to a bunch of sites that rarely change?

Or perhaps you didn't realize this, and have been wondering why your visitor retention rate isn't very good!

The reason is clear when you reflect on how you yourself browse the web.

As you know from your own experience browsing the web, sites that don't update often (i.e. every day) usually fall off one's "personal radar". After all, it is unrealistic to return daily to the many interesting places you've been on the web in the hope that one or two has updated some of their content. Typically it's just a big waste of time. And even if you were to visit them you would end up with a long-term detailed memory test. What changed, if anything?

As a result, people tend to stop visiting the sites that don't change daily in some significant way.

Encouraging Repeat Visitors

Now there's a solution to visitor retention.

Our service monitors the pages of your site and notifies your visitors when a change is detected.

This will allow your visitors to return every time you update your site, instead of giving up or forgetting about you and never returning.

You encourage visitors to return by placing a small box on your site which your visitors use to enter their email address.

Our service is entirely private and spam-free. We have been doing this since 1998, and have a long track record of reliable, private and spam-free service.

To get your ChangeDetection panel just go to the HTML page, then add it to the pages of your site.

It's that simple.

Improving Visitor Experience

In addition to notifying your visitors of changes to your site, we also maintain a change log of recent changes to every page being monitored.

You can link to this change log from your site to allow your visitors to see the history of a page.

This "power feature" is rarely seen on the web, and can both set your site apart from other sites and give your visitors a useful tool. It will also encourage more visitors to sign up for change notification, increasing repeat visitors that much more.

Here's how you link to your change log: First create a monitor for that page. When you create the monitor for your page you will be directed to the newly created change log for that page. While there will be no changes shown yet (as monitoring has just begun), this is the place changes will appear. Toward the bottom of the page you will find HTML to link to the page. Copy that HTML and paste it into your website.

Tips For Optimal Use

Here are few tips on how to get the most from our service:

  1. visibility - Place the ChangeDetection panel and change log link near the top of your pages to make it visible. Your visitors won't sign up if they don't notice it. In our experience, good placement can result in ten times the number of signups or more. That's ten times the number of people returning to your site when they receive a change notice.
  2. frames - If your site uses frames be sure to add the tag to the ChangeDetection panel that specifies where the actual content page is. Use a tag similar to this:
     <input type=hidden name=url value="http://findia.net/">
Remember to change the value of the tag to be the URL of the content frame!
  3. visibility again - We can't say it enough. In our experience, good placement can result in ten times the number of signups or more. That's ten times the number of people returning to your site when they receive a change notice. Place the ChangeDetection panel and change log link near the top of your pages to make it visible. Your visitors won't sign up if they don't notice it.

Controlling monitoring of your site

ChangeDetection honors the industry standard robots.txt protocol.

Our user-agent name for use in robots.txt files is: ChangeDetection

You can use a robots.txt file to ask our robot, or other polite robots, not to access part or all of your site.
